These two get used interchangeably, and they're not the same thing. The difference is simple once you see it: a chatbot handles typing, a voice agent handles talking. Both can qualify a lead and book a job — they just meet the customer in different places.
What a chatbot does
A chatbot is the chat window on your website, or the thing replying to texts and Google Business messages. Someone types a question, it answers, and if the job's a fit it books them or captures their details.
Where it shines is late nights and quiet browsing. Plenty of homeowners researching a roof replacement at 11pm will type a question they'd never pick up the phone to ask. Chat is also good for people who simply don't like calling — and there are more of them every year.
What a voice agent does
A voice agent answers your actual phone. It picks up on the first ring, sounds like a person, asks your qualifying questions, and books the appointment onto your calendar while the caller is still on the line.
Voice is what you need for urgency. Nobody with water coming through a ceiling is opening a chat window — they're calling, and they're calling three companies until someone picks up. That's the moment a voice agent earns its keep.
They're better together
Most home-services businesses want both, because customers don't behave uniformly. The 11pm researcher and the 7am emergency are the same business — you just can't serve them with one channel.
The key is that both should feed the same system. Same qualifying rules, same calendar, same CRM. Someone who chats on your site Monday and calls Wednesday should show up as one person with one history, not two half-finished leads nobody connects.
Which to start with
If your phone rings a lot and calls are going to voicemail, start with voice — that's usually where the biggest leak is, and the jobs are more urgent and higher value.
If you get real traffic to your website but the contact form barely converts, chat will show results faster.
Most shops we talk to are leaking on the phone first. It's the older problem, and the more expensive one.
The short answer
Chatbot for people who type, voice agent for people who call, both wired into one calendar and one CRM.
